2010, Looking Back: Army Worms; Where’s The Water; Here Come the Moths From Europe
One wet spring we had Army Worms. Whoa! Ate whole vines over night. We ran around like crazy people...how do we stay mostly organic and fight the good fight. Pluck, squish, flick. Turned out they just went away.
2009 was the 3rd drought year in a row...turns out the wells stayed strong through the season.
This year the European Grapevine Moth was discovered down valley. A city guy from the Ag Department in LA feverishly drove his sedan out into our vineyard to put out Moth traps and unceremoniously sank down to his axels. “Ever been in a vineyard in March?” I asked. “No” he said “I live in the city.” We pulled the car out.
We view everything with a little more ease now. We’ll be fine, and the old vines just keep kicking out the most voluptuous, dark, Petite Sirah grapes, year after year.
2006 Available and Best On the Market
P.S. I Love You is a group of Petite Sirah fanatics who have been making this under- appreciated wine, some, for decades. They have a tasting once a year and about 1000 people show up. It’s so good to go to a tasting where the attendees really know Petite Sirah. In breaks Anne and I try to taste all the other wines... maybe there are 50. We’re no doubt blinded by bias, but our loyal customers confirm out conclusions. We at Carver Sutro consistently make one of the top Petites in the world. Year after year, our wines are delicious and beautiful. The 2006 is no exception. Majestic purple. Unmistakable scent of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, violets, black pepper; round sweet tannins, long dreamy finish.
